Hi fellow D2 time travellers,

Since this forum is dedicated for those of us who enjoy playing old versions of Diablo 2, I wonder if any of you ever tried playing the Diablo 2 Shareware and try to push it to its limits? How high a level you can reach, what kind of gear you can find/gamble, best methods to make gold etc.

For those who never played the shareware, here are the limitations:
  • The only class available is the Barbarian
  • Only the first two quests of Act 1 are available, can't go further than the Cold Plains and the Burial Grounds
  • Only level 1 skills are available
  • Single Player only
It is basically the same build as the Stress Test that was done before D2's release in 1999, just without Battle.net.

I always liked the idea of playing in limited game spaces and pushing them to their limits. For example, in D1's shareware (named Spawned Diablo), me and a friend played for a bit together on Battle.net. My friend even made a blog, describing our adventures and discoveries, and theorycrafting here. We even tried PvPing. I eventually reached the max level there (15).

I digress, but for D2's Shareware, since monsters always give at least 1xp, in theory, with an infinite amount of free time you could reach level 99. Obviously, no one will go for that. But by leveling up enough, you unlock higher level items in gambling, meaning you can eventually gamble items you wouldn't usually get during early Act 1 Normal.

I wonder how far we could push this game playing legit. Since I think it is based on patch 1.04, you have the 3% chance of gambling uniques, meaning you could eventually get SoJs, and most of the low level uniques by gambling.

For those who want to have fun cheating a bit, I took a quick look at the mpq files, and all affixes, and base items are present in the Shareware. I dabbled around and gave myself Executioner Swords. They still worked, but there is no associated graphics to them, so they are invisible.

Even the monsters.txt file seems complete. Though I didn't try to spawn other monsters to see what would happen. I wonder if their AI is working. I'm guessing they have no graphics, if this would cause a crash or just result in immobile/invisible monsters?

@Erayz This sounds interesting bro. I have never played it. Where can we find it?
That's a good question. Googling for it I found a download link, but I won't link it here because I'm not sure how legit it is. I've had my copy of the Shareware for many years now, I don't remember where I got it, and pretty sure wherever I got it doesn't exist anymore.

The game doesn't launch post-install, but I wonder if cnc-ddraw will give it new life? stay tuned.

Yooo!!!! This is sick. Just drop cnc-ddraw in your install folder and it boots right up (on Windows 10 64-bit). Movement speed feels crazy fast for a level 1 lol. Guess they didn't want us wasting too much time getting places. I am going to go slay some zombies now and see how far I can go. Thanks for sharing this @Erayz

Lol yea cnc-ddraw would fix that video problem ;D. I'll need to check if my Diablo II Collector's Edition (1.00) has a shareware version on it.. maybe/maybe not. I remember when I installed some of my other Blizzard games from the CD, they would have the Shareware, but maybe I'm misremembering and it was just Diablo 1 that had "Install Spawn".

Imagine I made Singling for Shareware 1.04 lol, that would mean players command is available.

Lol. All you need to do is copy the same files that the normal 1.04 (b or c doesn't matter, they have same file list) platform has from your shareware 1.04 and put it in its own platform, it should work! Call the platform something like:

1.04 (Shareware)

That should be it!

I guess one other thing I thought about that might affect the experience is whether or not the MPQ files in 1.04 shareware and 1.04 retail are exactly the same, just to make sure there are no content differences between the core files. I would think it’s possible the MPQs are the same since the game was already developed and released, so the only differences would be in the DLLs and Patch_D2.mpq given the added restrictions.

I don't know much about MPQ files, do they contain graphics as well? If so, they probably removed a lot of graphics to save some space, and it would explain why some weapons are invisible. All armors are invisble, for example. They will never alter your character's appearance in the Shareware Also, there was someone who managed to gamble a Maul, which could be used, but appeared invisible in the characters' hands.

The other question I'm asking myself is that Shareware is version 1.04, but is it really equivalent to release 1.04? Or was Shareware patched separately (doubtful, but possible).

Yea I’m thinking that the MPQs are different (if you really wanna know you can generate a sha256 hash or something for all of the retail MPQs and also all of the MPQs installed by the shareware. You can also compare the MPQ file sizes. If they are different than it wouldn’t be Cactusable given that the MPQs are considered protected files so Cactus won’t replace them if they are in a Platform folder.

The 1.04 shareware files would have to be separately patched in that they probably forked from either 1.04a or b/c and then either removed a bunch of code and/or added code to restrict characters classes, acts, etc.

I remember reading up that during the battle.net beta from March 2000 where only 1000 testers were invited, they would grind like hell to try to get to the highest level possible. While the demo only has the first few areas, the battle.net beta had the entire act 1, and I think all classes too. Even though we can't fully crack it to work offline, it would be possible to use its text files with 1.00 with slight changes to relive that experience. I think it could be quite fun, experiencing the different balance, item graphics/stats, skill stats, etc. Allegedly people were able to get to around level 18 or so before the penalties grew too steep. In 1.10+ they introduced a bug where the champion minions (like fallens in the Jail cells) give the same XP as unique monsters, making it viable to grind until level 25 or so which is insane for act 1. It's called the Jail Strategy. Would be cool to find similar things in the beta.

ya level 13 is a grind in its own...
level 25 should be doable in act 1 ive done it before off andy
there was the d2r beta act 2 were one monster dropped a weapon that can get 4 sockets to get insight and sperit sword...

i would do the math on level first then get drunk and decide if this is what you want to do with your life...

wow got to level 99 in the starting area too like 20 years or something...

I remember playing this demo with my brother. We would take turns playing on the family computer, a Micron brand desktop with maybe a Pentium II. I remember we found a Bardiche and thought it was the best weapon in the world. I think we got to level 12.
